Play Ball! Indian Creek Baseball Makes History, Opening New Field to 7-1 Win
The Indian Creek baseball team made history Monday afternoon, March 19, as the Eagles opened the school’s new baseball field with a 7-1 win over Chapelgate Christian Academy. Sophomore Jordan Cann became the first player to cross home plate, and sophomore Parker Harris hit the first home run over the Eagles’ home fence.
Monday’s celebration kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony, as the team and coaches joined together to open the field. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Ryan Selmer who was drafted in the 31st round by the Mets and is currently playing for the Kingsport Mets, and Matt Selmer, Jr., a pitcher that was chosen to play in the Brooks Robinson All Star Game played at Camden Yards. Ryan and Matt are both sons of Eagles Head Coach Matt Selmer, Sr. The ICS Harmonizers A Cappella group sang the National Anthem before the first pitch. A festive atmosphere ensued with Jeno’s Steaks food truck on-site, and the ICS Eagle roaming through the stands to keep folks entertained between innings with some fun activities. What an awesome display of ICS school spirit at this historic family event!
In the baseball game, Parker Harris was clutch at the plate as his four RBIs led the Eagles in hitting. Freshmen Alex Seidleck (2) and Travis Garnett (1) accounted for the other RBIs. Frosh Evan Selmer pitched a complete game, giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 11 batters.
The game began slowly as neither team could notch a run in the first two innings, although both teams had runners on base. The Eagles broke open the game during the third and fourth innings when they scored 3 runs in each inning. Both teams scored one run apiece in the 6th inning to make the final score 7-1. Eagle runs were scored by Cann (3), P. Harris (2), Selmer (1), and senior Brandon Harris (1). ICS stole 6 bases led by Cann with three, while sophomores Maurice Elder (2) and John Warner (1) had the others. On defense, the Eagles played flawlessly with no errors. ICS baseball is now 1-1 in the conference and next plays at Beth Tfiloh on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m. The Eagles return to their home field on Thursday, March 21, at 4 p.m. to face Saints Peter and Paul School before heading off to Myrtle Beach for a Spring Break trip of training and scrimmages.
