Upper School is a time of significant transition and growth. Students learn independence, responsibility, and self-management, they explore and discover areas of interest and passion, they try new things (sometimes with success, and other times with failure, and both have their place!), and they develop the personal and academic skills they need to navigate college and life with confidence. Students enter Upper School as older children and, at their own pace over the course of four years, find their way to walking across the graduation stage as young adults – the transition is remarkable.
During their time in the ICS Upper School, students discover and refine their learning interests and skills while building an excellent and broad academic foundation. In the ninth grade, students engage with complex, interdisciplinary learning through intersecting history, science, and English curricula. From there, students have flexibility and choice within a wide variety of academic paths that allow them to amass the foundation and credits for a highly competitive college admission process. By design, students at ICS do not have to choose between their passions: they can be artists, athletes, scholars, and leaders.
