Upper School Community Reflects on Social Justice at this week's "Weekly Wednesday" Conversation
Upper School students came together for a "Weekly Wednesday Conversation" to reflect on the topic of social justice in the wake of this week's Derek Chauvin verdict. Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Doug McCuiston facilitated a conversation attended by both virtual and in-person Upper School students, faculty, and staff.
During their lunch hour, the group not only discussed thoughts and feelings prompted by the verdict from this week's trial, but also contemplated how large-scale change becomes possible and what individuals can do to have an impact.
"Justice is a practice," shared Katie, and ICS junior. "It is something that needs to happen regularly. It needs to look like legislative action." While the students and faculty in the meeting all agree that greater levels of awareness and activism are prevalent now, there is still much work that needs to be done. Students were encouraged to research and gain knowledge about causes they're passionate about and then lobby, vote, even run for office.
"Conversations like this are important," concluded Mr. McCuiston. "We are proud of our students and faculty for having the courage to have this dialogue and to listen and share with open minds and hearts."
